Stuyvesant High School

Dear Parents,

Congratulations on your child's acceptance to Stuyvesant High School! The Department of Mathematics offers a challenging academic program replete with enrichment opportunities at all levels. Due to the changing landscape of mathematics throughout the city and the accompanying change in the Regents Examination in Mathematics, it has been very difficult to properly place incoming students in mathematics. Accordingly, all entering students will be given an examination to determine their appropriate placement in mathematics. The placement exam will be given on the first thursday in June. There is no school on this day so all students should be able to attend. Students will be notified of their scheduled testing time and their room number and there is NO need to contact the math department. Additionally, we will be posting the room assignments on the web site as the exam draws near. Please prepare for your exam by using the review book that was purchased at the open house. list of topics for each of the placement examinations and suggested study texts is available at the Stuyvesant High School Math Department web Site.

At this time it is important for your child's guidance counselor to determine which class your child is currently taking at middle school. This information will be forwarded to us, in your acceptance packet, so the appropriate placement test can be given. The enclosed chart will help you understand the different categories of math classes that your child may be in. They are as follows:

  • Form S - This is for students who have not taken Algebra in middle school
  • Form T -This is for students who have taken a traditional Algebra course or part of Math A
  • Form U -This is for students who have completed the Math A sequence or the new Integrated Algebra course and have already taken or will be taking the Math A Regents or the Integrated Algebra regents in June. This is also for students who have partially completed Math B.
  • Form Y - This is for students who have completed Math B and will be taking the Math B Regents in June.
